Welcome to Horse Illustrated’s weekly installment of the Right Horse Adoptable Horse of the Week, offered in partnership with the ASPCA’s Right Horse program. This week’s adoptable horse is Square Penny! Check back weekly for a new featured horse so you can find your Right Horse.
Adoptable Horse: Square Penny, 15.2 hh 4-year-old bay Thoroughbred mare
Organization: After the Races, Elkton, Maryland
Square Penny is a sweet, 2018 bay filly who arrived at After the Races in February through Aftercare Charles Town. She stands just over 15.2 hh. She is undergoing rehab after a tendon injury at the track but is expected to have a great recovery in time. Square Penny raced nine times and is by Peace and Justice out of a Friends Lake mare which means she has AP Indy in her bloodlines as well. She had a good first evaluation with the vet and also a terrific follow up. She’s sound and currently getting 45 minutes of exercise a day and will be re-evaluated again soon. She is not expected to have any limitations once healed. Penny has no vices and has been very easy to have in the barn once she settled in with her other neighbors in our rehab wing. She loves being groomed, pampered, and is good for hand walking. She’s also very good for the farrier and vet.
