Want to help battle cancer and get great gear? The more than 7,000–member American Junior Paint Horse Association (AjPHA) recently launched an online store, located at cafepress.com/ajpha, as part of its 2007 Presidential Service Project. Titled “One Stride at a Time,” the project is an annual goodwill endeavor that encourages all APHA Youth members to give back to their communities. The concept for One Stride at a Time came from AjPHA President Laura Akerlund. Her vision is to raise money for cancer research by allowing the public to participate through opportunities like the online store, with all proceeds going to the cause.
“All of us know someone who has survived, passed away from or has been diagnosed with cancer. This is for them,” Akerlund says.
The public may also become involved with One Stride at a Time through APHA regional clubs, which can hold their own fundraising events. At the end of the summer 2007, funds will be gathered and the regional clubs will be allowed the option of either donating the money to a charitable foundation or to an individual in their community who is fighting cancer. The APHA regional club that raises the most money and demonstrates the most dedication toward the cause will be in line for the 2007 From the Heart Award. That’s a $500 cash award presented by long-time APHA Corporate Sponsor Markel Insurance, and will be presented at the 2007 World Championship Paint Horse Show.
