Top 3 Silver Spur Award Finalists Announced

Competition narrowed on Tuesday, when the American Quarter Horse Association announced the three finalists for the 2006 MD Barns Silver Spur Award.

Panamas Sun, Smokin On A Star and Temecula Toy Boy are all up for the award, which recognizes American Quarter Horses that affect the lives of humans through outstanding training, contribution or accomplishment.

Nominations for the award were open through Sept. 30, and the top five were featured on the AQHA website. The vote then opened to AQHA members through Dec. 31.

The winner of the 2006 Silver Spur Award will be announced at the AQHA Convention in Houston on March 4, during the Hall of Fame induction banquet.

  • Personally, I'm sort of torn between Panamas Sun and Smokin on a Star. With America at war, I think it's fitting that a horse that helps our troops could stand as a patriotic symbol, regardless of how you might feel about the war itself. On the other hand, I thought that Smokin on a Star sounds like a life long partner to his owner. That man has truly come to love that horse. So I guess I'd be happy with either of those two horses as the winner.

  • My favorite horse nominated for the silver spur awards is Smokin' on a star. She is a true hero, well, actually, all of the nominees are heros. My favorite breed of horse is a quarter horse, so I was incredibly interested in this competition. I've honestly never heard of it before. Now though, I'm really glad I subscribed to horse illustrated. I know that I'm just a twelve year old girl, but to me, Smokin' on a star sounds like a real sweet horse with a winning personality. I hope she wins the silver spur competition.
