Sorrow Follows the Loss of Goffert 369

Sadness took over Iron Spring Farm last month when the Friesian stallion Goffert 369 suffered irreparable colic. The Grand Prix competitor known as “Herbie,” was euthanized Feb. 13 after all attempts to save him failed. Goffert 369 was a beloved spokesman for the Friesian breed with a fan base around the world. In 2004, he performed at the 125th Anniversary Celebration of the Friesian Studbook where more than 10,000 fans gave an uproarious applause and a standing ovation. In 2006, Goffert’s likeness was captured in a popular Breyer model.

“Goffert was one of a kind,” says Mary Alice Malone, owner of Iron Spring Farm. “He truly was a superstar and we feel very blessed to have had the chance to know him.”

Goffert’s competitive career with Belinda Nairn Wertman included wins at the Grand Prix Level at prestigious shows such as the Zada Cup in Florida and Dressage at Lexington, with scores as high as 74 percent.

“Goffert was a once in a lifetime experience,” Nairn Wertman says. “I have never met a more intelligent horse in my life or shared such a bond. He and I were simpatico—nothing ever needed to be said; it was just understood. He was an ambassador for the Friesian horse and I believe he will continue to be.”

By the Preferent stallion Reitse out of the Star mare Nynke J, Goffert was a sought after sire and received First Premium status each year he was presented to the Friesch Paarden-Stamboek (FPS). Goffert was one of the few FPS approved stallions to compete at Grand Prix.

“Goffert was always an impressive athlete,” Malone says. “We miss him already.”
