Showing horses in winter doesn’t have to involve a trip to Florida or California. For exhibitors who don’t mind braving the cold, Denver, Colo. is the place to be for a mid-winter horse show at National Western.
The show provides something for everyone, with an AQHA-sanctioned Quarter Horse show on January 10-11 and an APHA Paint show January 12-15 kicking off two weeks of competition. These shows include western and English events, including team penning, versatility, roping and reining.
The USEF events begin with hunter/jumper competition starting on January 16th and concluding January 20th with the $30,000 Jack Daniel’s Grand Prix. USEF-recognized open competition with classes for Saddlebreds, Morgans, Arabians, Appaloosas and equitation riders takes place on January 20-21. Draft horses and mules close out the show with their classes behing held January 22-25.
In addition to competition, the National Western Stock Show is home to the Mile High Paint and Quarter Horse sale, held after the first day of the show on January 10. On the evening of January 21 and 22, spectators can experience the performances of An Evening of Dancing Horses, and event that includes elements of freestyle dressage, reining and drill team riding set to music.
