My 11 year old Quarter horse had developed heaves last year. This year she has a spell that I noticed is much worse. So feeding her soaked beet bulp with Cough Free in it mixed with a small amount of grain seemed to help. I also give her soaked hay cubes and wet her hay flakes. Hoping this will give her some help keeping the weight on.
Article was helpful Our 10 year old 1/4 horse mare got heaves last fall when we received our winter stock of baled hay, she is not kept in a barn, but is out with the herd all year round, we treated her over the winter with dex and another liquid medication that was extemely expensesive, this seemed to work but once of the meds the heaves quickly returned, we have her on dex now with an inhaler, the same medication my daughter takes for asthma, the problem was that the inhaler would'nt work as the air ways were so clogged, so now she is on the dex until her breathing eases, then we can get the inhaler going again, we soak and wash the bales of hay and hope that she will be able to breath on her own by the winter, I expect that we will need to continue to wash her hay for the rest of her life during the winter when the pasture is covered in snow, she's the best horse we have, she's so willing to please
