Neglected and abandoned horses were rescued by the SPCAMCOn Friday, July 30, humane investigators from the SPCA of Monterey County, California investigated reports of a herd of emaciated horses in San Ardo. At that time, the SPCA rescued one mare, who they later named Paris, because she was so severely emaciated that she was barely able to walk. They returned the following day with hay and water for the remaining horses, only to find that the approximately 18 horses had disappeared.

The horses were initially located on a property that is in foreclosure, and it was not immediately apparent who was actually responsible for the herd.

On Tuesday, August 3, the horses were located on an adjoining property. The SPCA investigators are still unsure if the horses were removed or if they wandered off the property on their own. They have now taken custody of all of the horses, some of which are believed to be in foal, and are caring for them while the investigation continues.

The horses were in poor condition and there was no food or water available to them on the property. The SPCA for Monterey County is offering a $5,000 reward for anyone with information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for the abandonment and neglect of these horses.

The horses may be available for adoption in the future after they have been brought back to full health. Paris, the mare initially seized from the property, has shown gradual improvement but is not yet out of the woods.

  1. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the Heavenly Lights.(James 1:17) Did God give horses to us to abuse and neglect them? No! God loves us and he loves them. He uses us to help take care of them.

  2. Stories like these break my heart. This is my own county and I really have a hard time dealing with this abuse. I just dont understand. My daughter and I like to go to this SPCA and visit the animals. I hope these horses find good homes as soon as possible

  3. Job 39:19 (which just so happens to be one of my favorite Bible verses), you are so correct. To further prove my, or rather our, point, see Proverbs 12:10. Just because mankind has dominion over animals DOES NOT mean that we can treat them any way we want. Look at it this way; a king may have dominion over his people doesn’t give him permission to be cruel to them. He must be kind, strong, and compassionate towards them. We should treat animals the same way.

  4. I adopted baby Stella from this herd of horses rescued in San Ardo. Thankfully she had a healthy birth at the SPCA ! Stella will be four in January . She is a beautiful blessing to our family!
