But they used Konik horses, and i know, konik is a horse breed, but i would rather they use horses like thoroughbreds and hanoverians. otherwise, it was good.
My horse would definitely take the treat over the grooming any day! I think it is good to mix them up, though.
Personally, I think that grooming is a better reward if you are doing something for the horse, not to the horse. But treats work really well to, but my horse likes it more when I go out and spend time with her then going out and giving her a treat.
My mare is very focused on whether or not I am paying attention to her when I am around her. Though, in my opinion she seems calmer when we both are doing something together. She really enjoys interacting with all types of people. I have noticed that she get's very quiet around little kids and babies...almost like she doesn't want to seem scary. :o)
It would have been interesting to have done a similar study with TTouch, which significantly bonds the horse/human relationship. In performing a "vigorous" scratching like another horse, perhaps there's a missing link there. Thanks so much for being a meaningful publication/website in bringing your audience varied and valuable topics.
I bought a mule that was very standoffish. After having her a month and trying to win her over with treats, I discovered she really enjoyed when I brushed her. After spending 30 minutes brushing her it was like I had a different mule. She was in my pocket and much more trusting. I believe grooming creates a stronger bond than using treats.
