Horse Illustrated Magazine

Is there an equine
rescue organization in your community that you think deserves some
attention? Do you have a knack for photography, or want a project to
help you improve your skills behind the camera?

Horses in Need is an
project conducted by the Equine Photographers Network (EPN) that has
taken place annually since 2009. The project is open to amateur and
professional photographers, and EPN membership is not required to
participate.

The premise is
simple: Capture the story of a horse, a rescue organization, or
people who work with horses in need in a photojournalistic style. The
goal is to shine a light on the condition of horses in different
circumstances and the individuals and organizations who are working
to make those horses’ lives better.

Participants will
submit between four and eight photos for each project with
accompanying text to tell the story of the horse, organization, or
people depicted. Photographers can submit up to three separate
projects with different subjects, and will receive a complimentary
three-month EPN membership for each story.

Participating
photographers are responsible for obtaining the necessary permission
and releases to photograph and share the images they use in their
stories.

Some suggested
subjects include:

• Off-track
  Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds
• Mustang holding pens
• Auction houses
• Sanctuaries and
  retirement homes
• Foster homes
