Escaped Equines Have a Snow Day on Staten Island

Some of us use a snowstorm as an excuse to stay indoors. Two Miniature Horses on Staten Island used this week’s nor’easter as an excuse to have a fun day out, exploring the snow- and ice-covered neighborhood.

The Mini horses were spotted wandering the streets by resident Robert Stasio, according to a Gothamist article. After seeing the out-of-place equines through a window in his home, Stasio got in his truck and followed them through the neighborhood. Eventually, traffic made it impossible for him to keep chasing them in the truck, so he got out and tailed them on foot.

Ultimately, Stasio caught up to the ponies, and with help from the local police, their fun snow day out was brought to an end.

The horses have returned to their home, reportedly a stable on Wakefield Road on Staten Island, and they’re now safe and sound and no worse for wear after their winter adventure.

For those who are wondering, yes, horses are allowed on urban Staten Island. The borough is home to several commercial boarding and lesson stables, giving city-dwellers some exposure to a small part of the rural world.
