Large animal shelters that opened last week due to the California wildfires are beginning to shut down in San Diego County, but Orange County shelters remain crowded as the fire there, although 65 percent contained, continues to force evacuations in some backcountry areas.
The San Diego Humane Society is continuing to conduct welfare checks on animals in San Diego and is providing food and water to animals whose owners are not able to get back into their homes. The Society has reported that a small number of stray/unclaimed pets have been found. If you are missing a horse or pet as a result of the San Diego wildfires, call (619) 236-4250 with a full description of your animal.
As the fires become more and more contained, the San Diego Humane Society reports that it is shifting efforts to focus on helping the pets and families whose homes were destroyed.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is providing funding to the SanDiego Humane Society for hay and other equine supplies needed following the wildfires. For more information on how to help support the Humane Society’s efforts through the ASPCA, visit www.aspca.org.
