Broodmare Sells for Record Price

How much is a royally bred broodmare worth? How about $10.5 million? That’s the price paid for Playful Act, a 5-year-old mare in-foal to a leading stallion at the Keeneland Thoroughbred sale this past November in Kentucky. That whopping price tag is a world record for a broodmare sold at public auction.

However, a hefty price is not always indicative of future success. The Green Monkey, a flashy three-year-old bay Thoroughbred colt, sold for a record $16 million more than a year ago. He has yet to set the racing world on fire, having finished well behind the leaders in his first two outings.
