The sport of combined driving is based on equestrian three-day eventing. Like eventing, combined driving horses are tested on their endurance, obedience and athleticism over three phases of competition.
This year’s FEI World Championship for single horses takes place from September 12-16 in Lezirias, Portugal. One of the drivers who will be representing the U.S. is Kentucky-based Sterling Graburn. Watch the video below to see Graburn and his Dutch Harness Horse, Ulano, in action. To get an idea of what it’s like to be in the driver’s seat during the intense marathon phase, check out the carriage cam starting at 0:58.
