What began as a public art project in 2001 has quickly become a national sensation as The Trail of Painted Ponies continues to expand and attract new artists. It started in Santa Fe, N.M., when premiere artists from around the Southwest were invited to embellish life-size fiberglass horses. The stunning results received acclaim from art collectors and national media, attracting a wide audience. Painted Pony originals have been purchased and exhibited by multiple museums and miniature reproductions of Painted Pony figurines have become a hot-selling collectible.

Now, The Trail of Painted Ponies is scheduled to travel to the horse capital of the world for the world premiere of “Pony Expressionism: The Horse as Art.” The Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington will feature the exhibition from April 20 – Sept. 9 and will include four life-size ponies. In addition, a series of special events, artist lectures and signings will take place throughout the summer.

  1. Are the life-size ponies on permanent display anywhere? Sure wish there was an article that told this–one way or the other. Mostly I find sites for purchasing the small ones.
